7 Warning Signs of Dryer Vent Buildup

KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR THESE

Have you experienced any of these common warning signs?

1. There is a burning smell coming from your dryer during or after use
Burning smells indicate that there is an excessive lint build-up. If you don’t have your dryer vents cleaned and inspected annually, then you will have a build-up of lint which will give off a burning smell. This build-up is usually located in the dryer vent, drum casing, or lint trap.

2. Drying times are noticeably slower
Do you have to run your clothes through multiple cycles before they are fully dry? Clothes dryers are designed to lead moist, hot air out through the vent. However, lint and other debris can build up and cause a serious blockage. Keep in mind that all these extra dryer cycles can cause excess wear and tear on your clothes as well as an increase in your utility bills.

3. Clothes and/or dryer components are extremely hot to touch
If either the top of your dryer or your clothing is excessively hot after a drying cycle, then this could mean inadequate airflow caused by a clogged dryer vent. Over time, this can decrease the lifespan of your dryer while increasing your energy bills. You should have the dryer vent cleaned before using your dryer again.

4. The dryer "Check Filter" light is on
Many new dryers have a built-in feature called a check filter light which will let you know if your dryer vents are damaged or obstructed. If you see this light on, then you should give us a call soon so that we can come inspect and clean your dryer vents. Some new dryers will even have a built-in safety fail that will prevent the dryer from even starting until the issue is resolved.

5. Exterior dryer vent flap is clogged or wont open freely
If you see any issues with your dryer vent flap not opening the way it should, then there could be a bird’s nest or excessive lint blocking the airflow. Frequent use of your dryer can cause excessive deposits of lint to seep out from the outside vent cover. This will then cause the vent and dryer to work less efficiently.

6. Evidence of lint scattered around the dryer location
If you see lint scattered around or if your lint trap is always full, then you could have an obstructed dryer vent. Chances are your lint trap, dryer cabinet, or vents have accumulated an excessive amount of lint.

7. Your last dryer vent cleaning was a year ago or more
If it has been at least one year since your last dryer vent cleaning, then you run a high risk of carbon monoxide poisoning or dryer fire. You shouldn’t clean the unit yourself as this can cause damage to the vent or dryer itself. Give us a call and we’ll come inspect and clean your dryer vents.
